Municipal Art Gallery of Rhodes

About

The Municipal Art Gallery of Rhodes is one of the most engaging cultural spaces in the Dodecanese, showcasing the island’s vibrant artistic identity. Founded in 1964 and housed in a handsome Italian‑era building on Simi Square, the gallery focuses on modern Greek art, particularly works created during the early 20th century—a period when Rhodes became a meeting point for artists inspired by its light, colours and layered history. Inside, visitors encounter paintings by leading figures of the Greek School, including works by Giallinas, Parthenis, and Maleas. These artists captured Rhodes with expressive brushwork, warm Mediterranean palettes and a fascination with local architecture. The gallery’s collection of engravings and watercolours offers a more intimate perspective, revealing everyday life, harbour scenes and traditional island interiors. One of the most interesting aspects is how the gallery highlights Rhodes as a crossroads of cultures. Several works reflect influences from Venetian, Ottoman and Italian periods, blending classical Greek themes with modernist experimentation. Sculptures and small decorative pieces complement the paintings, creating a rounded portrait of Greek artistic evolution.
