Ruins of the Church of Panagia tou Bourgou

About

The Ruins of Panagia tou Bourgou are among the most evocative remnants of medieval Rhodes, standing in the heart of the old town’s former bourgeois quarter. Built in the 14th century as a Gothic Catholic church for the Latin community, it was one of the largest and most elegant religious buildings outside the Knights’ main stronghold. Today, only its soaring arches and fragments of its façade remain, creating a dramatic open‑air monument shaped by time, sieges and earthquakes. What makes Panagia tou Bourgou especially interesting is its architecture. The pointed arches and ribbed vaults reveal pure Gothic influence—rare in Greece—while the surviving stone tracery hints at once‑ornate windows. The church was heavily damaged during the Ottoman conquest in 1522 and later by earthquakes, leaving behind a skeletal structure that feels both fragile and monumental. Visitors walking through the ruins can still trace the original floor plan: the nave, side aisles and the elevated sanctuary. The open sky above the broken vaults creates a striking contrast, turning the space into a natural stage for light and shadow. Carved stones scattered around the site include fragments of capitals and decorative mouldings, offering clues to the church’s former splendour.

Location

The Ruins of the Church of Panagia tou Bourgou stand in the eastern part of the Medieval Old Town of Rhodes, Greece. You’ll find them on Solomou Alchadef 7-13, Rhodes 85100, close to the Gate of the Virgin and the edge of the Jewish Quarter. This was once a large Gothic church built by the Knights in the early 14th century for the civilian population living outside the main citadel. Most of the building was destroyed during the Ottoman siege of 1522, but the remaining vaulted arches and sections of the walls still create a striking and atmospheric spot. Just a short walk away is the Jewish Quarter with the Kahal Shalom Synagogue and the Jewish Museum of Rhodes. Nearby you’ll also find the Marine Gate leading towards the harbour, as well as the Archaeological Museum and the Street of the Knights that climbs towards the Palace of the Grand Master.
