Ancient Stadium of Rhodes

About

The Ancient Stadium of Rhodes is one of the island’s most atmospheric archaeological sites, nestled on Monte Smith and surrounded by pine trees. Built in the 2nd century BC, it formed part of the grand Hellenistic complex dedicated to athletic and cultural life. Here, young Rhodians trained for competitions linked to the cult of Helios, the island’s patron god, reflecting Rhodes’ reputation as a centre of education and physical excellence. The stadium is remarkably well preserved. Visitors can walk the length of its 200‑metre track, still clearly defined, and see the stone seating where spectators once gathered. The arched entrance, known as the xystos, is one of the most interesting features—its elegant curve marks the point where athletes entered the arena. At the western end stands a restored section of seating, giving a sense of the original scale. Next to the stadium lies the odeon, a small marble theatre used for musical contests and public events. Together, these structures reveal how integrated athletic, artistic and civic life were in ancient Rhodes. The site’s charm lies in its simplicity: no crowds, no modern reconstructions, just the clean lines of Hellenistic architecture and sweeping views over the sea.

Location

The Ancient Stadium of Rhodes sits on the slopes of Monte Smith hill, just west of the modern centre of Rhodes Town, Greece. You’ll find it within the wider Acropolis of Rhodes archaeological site, often listed simply as Monte Smith or Diagoridon Street area, Rhodes 85100. This Hellenistic stadium dates back to the 3rd or 2nd century BC and once hosted athletic contests held in honour of the sun god Helios. Much of the elongated track and some of the seating have been restored, so you can walk along the length of it and get a clear sense of its original scale. Right beside it stands a small marble odeon, and a short climb takes you up to the remaining columns of the Temple of Apollo. The rest of the Acropolis ruins are scattered across the same hillside, and the views out over the sea and the town are excellent. A short distance downhill brings you to the walls of the Medieval Old Town, where the Palace of the Grand Master, the Street of the Knights and the Archaeological Museum are all within easy reach.
