Panagia tou Kastrou—Our Lady of the Castle—is the largest and most historically layered church within the medieval city of Rhodes. Originally built in the 11th century as a Byzantine basilica, it was transformed by the Knights Hospitaller into a Gothic Catholic cathedral and later adapted again during the Ottoman period. Few churches in Greece display such a seamless blend of Byzantine arches, Gothic vaults and Islamic decorative touches. Inside, the church feels monumental yet serene. The high rib‑vaulted ceiling, added by the Knights, creates a dramatic vertical space unusual for Orthodox architecture. Fragments of medieval frescoes survive on the walls, offering glimpses of the church’s original iconography. The stone columns and pointed arches reveal the Gothic phase, while the mihrab niche—added when the building served as a mosque—remains a striking reminder of Rhodes’ multicultural past. One of the most interesting features is the acoustics: the combination of Byzantine layout and Gothic height produces a resonant, cathedral‑like sound. Visitors can also see carved coats of arms of the Knights, traces of Ottoman repairs and restored sections that highlight the building’s long evolution.
Rhodes Greece
Panagia tou Kastrou, also known as Our Lady of the Castle, sits in the Medieval Old Town of Rhodes, Greece. You’ll find it on Megalou Alexandrou Square, Rhodes 85100, right at the eastern end of the Street of the Knights near the sea walls. This is the largest surviving Byzantine church on the island. Over the centuries it served as an Orthodox church, a Catholic cathedral and later a mosque, and today it houses a permanent exhibition of icons and medieval sculptures. Just across the way is the Archaeological Museum, housed in the old Knights’ Hospital. A short walk up the Street of the Knights leads to the Palace of the Grand Master. The Decorative Arts Collection and other corners of the medieval walls are also close by.
