Street of the Knights

About

The Street of the Knights is the most evocative avenue in the Medieval City of Rhodes, a perfectly preserved passageway that once housed the lodgings of the Knights Hospitaller. Each “Inn” belonged to a different langue—France, Italy, Spain, Provence—creating a rare architectural tapestry where every façade reflects the identity of its medieval residents. Walking the street feels like entering a living museum: cobblestones worn smooth by centuries, Gothic arches, heraldic shields carved in stone, and austere façades that once hosted diplomatic meetings and military councils. Inside the buildings, visitors can explore selected restored halls used for exhibitions. These interiors reveal the Knights’ disciplined lifestyle: stone chambers, vaulted ceilings, and sparse decorative elements that emphasise function over luxury. The Inn of France is particularly striking, with its grand staircase and emblematic coats of arms. An interesting detail is how the street was designed with subtle defensive logic. Its gentle incline and narrow width made it easy to control, while the elevated entrances protected the Knights during sieges. Today, the street is quiet and atmospheric, especially early in the morning when sunlight touches the limestone walls.

Back in the 14th century, it served as the main thoroughfare connecting the city harbour to the grand palace, lined with the inns where knights from different European countries resided and gathered. At the upper end of the street sits the imposing Palace of the Grand Master, a massive medieval castle that dominates the old town skyline. Right across from the palace grounds, you will also find the Medieval Clock Tower, locally called Roloi, which offers fantastic panoramic views over the rooftops and harbour. At the lower end of the street lies the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes, housed inside the impressive 15th-century Hospital of the Knights. Following the path down toward the harbour brings you to the Church of Our Lady of the Castle and the historic Marine Gate. A short walk from the street also leads you to the Mosque of Suleiman the Magnificent and the surrounding lively bazaar area along Sokratous Street.
