Medieval Moat of Rhodes

About

The Medieval Moat of Rhodes is one of the island’s most atmospheric walks, a 4‑kilometre ribbon of greenery carved between massive fortification walls. Although it looks like a park today, it was never filled with water; instead, it served as a dry defensive trench designed to trap invaders beneath the cannons of the Knights Hospitaller. Its scale is striking: some sections reach 20 metres in depth, creating a dramatic canyon that circles the Old Town. Inside, visitors find a quiet world far removed from the busy streets above. The moat is dotted with bastions, hidden gates, and stone outcrops that once supported artillery platforms. The Gate of Amboise area is particularly impressive, with towering walls that reveal how Rhodes became one of the Mediterranean’s strongest medieval fortresses. Walking paths lead through shaded stretches lined with pines and oleanders, making it a favourite route for photographers and history lovers. What makes the moat special is the contrast between military engineering and natural serenity. It offers a rare chance to explore the fortifications from below, appreciating their scale and craftsmanship. For many, it’s the most immersive way to experience Rhodes’ medieval character.
