The Windmills of Rhodes stand as elegant sentinels at the entrance of Mandraki Harbour, a trio of restored stone towers that once powered the island’s medieval grain production. Built by the Knights Hospitaller, they formed part of a larger port complex that included warehouses, defensive towers, and the famous deer statues. Their position was strategic: Rhodes was a major trading hub, and the windmills processed grain arriving from across the Aegean. Each mill features a cylindrical stone base and a wooden sail mechanism reconstructed to reflect their original appearance. Although you cannot enter the interiors, the exterior details are worth close attention. The masonry shows the typical craftsmanship of the 15th century, and the mills’ alignment along the breakwater creates one of Rhodes’ most photographed panoramas. Visitors come for the views as much as the history. From the windmills you can see the Fort of Saint Nicholas, the harbour’s lighthouse tower, and the shimmering Mandraki waterfront. At sunset, the mills glow in warm light, making the area a favourite spot for photographers.

Because they are located right at the harbour mouth, stepping off the pier places you near many of the city's top historical sites. Right at the end of the same breakwater sits the medieval Fort Saint Nicholas, built to guard the port entrance. Near the harbour entrance, you will also see the famous deer statues on stone pillars, marking the location where the ancient Colossus of Rhodes is said to have stood. A brief walk across the waterfront brings you to the imposing stone walls of the Medieval City of Rhodes.
