Ballhof Eins

Ballhof Eins
About

Ballhof Eins is a historic theatre venue located at Ballhofplatz in Hannover’s Old Town, serving as a vibrant stage for contemporary drama and youth productions. Originally built between 1649 and 1664 by Duke Georg Wilhelm, the Ballhof was designed for courtly festivities and the fashionable game of shuttlecock. By the late 17th century, it had become a performance space for traveling troupes and later evolved into Hanover’s largest event hall. The building underwent significant renovations in 1779–80 and was expanded in the 20th century with a glass foyer and the adjacent Ballhof Zwei. Today, Ballhof Eins is part of the Niedersächsisches Staatstheater Hannover and hosts innovative theatre and opera productions, often featuring young artists and experimental formats. With seating for around 300 guests, it offers an intimate setting for classics reimagined and new works by emerging playwrights. The surrounding Ballhofplatz, lined with cafés and timber-framed houses, enhances its role as a cultural and social hub.
