Theatermuseum Hannover is a unique cultural institution housed within the Schauspielhaus at Prinzenstraße 9, 30159 Hannover. Founded in 1927, it is the only museum of its kind in Germany located inside an active theater. Its mission is to preserve and present the rich theatrical heritage of Lower Saxony’s capital. The museum offers a permanent exhibition and rotating special displays that explore 350 years of stage history, from baroque opera to contemporary performance. Visitors encounter original costumes, stage models, playbills, and personal artifacts from notable actors and directors. Despite suffering major losses during World War II, the collection was painstakingly rebuilt and expanded. Since 1993, the museum has been accessible through the Schauspielhaus foyer, offering an immersive experience that bridges past and present. It also hosts readings, concerts, and children’s theater, making it a vibrant part of Hannover’s cultural life.
