Museum für Textile Kunst
About

The Museum für Textile Kunst Hannover is a hidden gem located in a converted World War II bunker at Borchersstraße 23, 30559 Hannover-Kirchrode. Founded in 2007 by textile collector Erika Knoop, the museum showcases an extraordinary private collection of fabrics, garments, and handcrafted textiles from around the world. The permanent exhibition, “Textile World Tour,” features traditional and imaginative pieces including scarves, robes, and ceremonial costumes, many of which were acquired during Knoop’s travels. The museum’s unique setting provides ideal climate conditions for preserving delicate materials, with thick concrete walls protecting against humidity and temperature fluctuations. Exhibits are displayed across two floors, often suspended freely or mounted on mannequins, allowing visitors to appreciate the craftsmanship up close. Special exhibitions, such as “SCHEREN-SCHNITT,” explore the social and ethical dimensions of fashion and textile production. The museum is a vibrant space for cultural dialogue, blending artistry, history, and global perspectives.
