Altes Rathaus Hannover is the city’s oldest secular building and a prime example of North German Brick Gothic architecture, dating back to the 13th century. Originally constructed around 1230, the Old Town Hall served as a civic center where merchants stored goods, council meetings were held, and public ceremonies took place. Its cellar, once ground level, became subterranean after the market square was raised in the 14th century. The building underwent several expansions, including the addition of the Schmiedestraße wing in 1410 and the market-facing façade with ornate stepped gables in the mid-15th century. Notable features include the clay frieze depicting medieval scenes and the Hoflaube arcade built in 1490. Severely damaged during World War II, the Altes Rathaus was meticulously restored in the 1950s and 1960s. Today, it houses the city’s registry office and serves as a venue for cultural events and exhibitions. Its architectural elegance and historical depth make it a key landmark in Hanover’s Altstadt.
