Waterloo Column
About

The Waterloo Column (Waterloosäule) in Hanover is a striking neoclassical monument commemorating the 1815 Battle of Waterloo and the role of Hanoverian troops in Napoleon’s defeat. Designed by architect Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves, the column was constructed between 1825 and 1832 and stands 46.31 meters tall, made of Deister sandstone. It is crowned by a statue of Victoria, the Roman goddess of victory, symbolizing peace and triumph. Located at Waterlooplatz near the Leine Palace, the column originally stood amidst military barracks and parade grounds, reflecting Hanover’s historical ties to the British crown and its military heritage. Remarkably, the monument survived World War II bombings intact, serving as a resilient reminder of 19th-century European unity against expansionist militarism. Today, the Waterloo Column is a prominent stop along Hanover’s “Red Thread” city walk, offering visitors a glimpse into the city’s royal and architectural past. Its elegant proportions and historical significance make it one of Hanover’s most iconic landmarks.
