New Town Hall Hanover

New Town Hall Hanover
About

The New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus) in Hanover is a majestic architectural landmark and a symbol of civic pride, completed in 1913 after twelve years of construction. Designed by Hermann Eggert and Gustav Halmhuber, the building reflects the eclectic style of the Wilhelmine era, combining Neo-Renaissance and Baroque elements. It stands at the southern edge of Hanover’s city center, nestled within the scenic Maschpark. Built on 6,026 beech piles and financed entirely by municipal funds, the structure cost ten million marks—a sum famously declared “paid in cash” to Kaiser Wilhelm II. The hall’s 97.73-meter-high dome features a unique arched elevator, the only one of its kind in Europe, offering panoramic views of the city and the distant Harz Mountains. Inside, detailed city models depict Hanover’s evolution across centuries. The New Town Hall also played a historic role in 1946 when the state of Lower Saxony was proclaimed within its grand hall. Today, it remains a popular tourist destination and a functioning seat of city administration.
