Staatsoper Hannover
About

Staatsoper Hannover is a premier opera house located at Opernplatz 1, serving as a cultural beacon in the heart of Lower Saxony’s capital. Built between 1845 and 1852 by court architect Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves, the neoclassical building replaced the outdated palace theatre and was later reconstructed after wartime destruction in 1943. Today, it is home to the Niedersächsisches Staatsorchester Hannover—one of Germany’s oldest orchestras—and hosts a diverse program of opera, ballet, and concertshannover-living.de. The Staatsoper is part of the Niedersächsische Staatstheater Hannover GmbH, which stages over 1,100 performances annually across five venues. Its repertoire ranges from classical masterpieces to contemporary premieres, with a strong emphasis on international collaboration and artistic innovation. In 2020, the Staatsoper Hannover was awarded the prestigious “Oper! Award” for Best Opera House of the YearHolidays in Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony). With its elegant architecture and dynamic programming, it remains a cornerstone of Hanover’s cultural identity.
