The Duivelshuis in Arnhem is one of the city’s most striking historic landmarks, blending late‑medieval origins with early Renaissance flair. Built in the 15th century as a city farm, it gained prominence when Duke Charles of Gelre acquired it in 1518 and transformed it into a stately residence. In 1539, the building passed to Maarten van Rossum, a powerful military commander whose 1543 renovation added the ornate Renaissance façade that still defines the structure today. Its carved satyr figures—often mistaken for devils—gave rise to the building’s evocative nickname, “Devil’s House.” Despite wartime damage, the Duivelshuis survived and now forms part of Arnhem’s City Hall complex, housing the mayor’s office and serving as a symbolic link between the city’s turbulent past and its modern civic life. With its sculpted stonework, hanging oriel window, and richly decorated interiors, it remains a compelling stop for visitors exploring Arnhem’s historic heart.

Duivelshuis is located in the historic city centre of Arnhem, at Koningstraat 38, close to the Rhine and integrated into the modern city hall complex. It stands directly beside the Eusebius Church in the Eusebius Quarter, one of Arnhem’s main heritage areas. The surrounding streets offer cafes, restaurants and shops, while major sights such as Eusebius Church, Musis & Stadstheater and several art galleries are all within a short walking distance.
