The Waalse Kerk is one of Arnhem’s most atmospheric historic churches, tucked away on Gasthuisstraat in the old city centre. Originally built in 1404 as the Agnietenkapel of a medieval convent, it later became the home of the French‑speaking Protestant community formed by Walloon and Huguenot refugees in the 16th century. Its simple Gothic architecture, single‑aisled layout, and three‑sided choir give the church an intimate character, while the interior preserves notable features such as a 17th‑century oak pulpit, historic memorial boards, and an 18th‑century König organ relocated from Nijmegen. After suffering wartime damage, the church was restored with a modern west façade, blending old and new with quiet elegance. Today, the Waalse Kerk remains a serene cultural and spiritual venue, hosting monthly services, concerts, and community events that continue its long tradition of hospitality in the heart of Arnhem.
