De Hoop Windmill is a charming reminder of Arnhem’s rural past, standing proudly on the edge of the city in the district of Elden. Built in 1846, this traditional tower mill once played a vital role in grinding grain for the surrounding community. Its brick base, wooden cap, and long sails reflect classic Dutch milling craftsmanship, and despite the passage of time, the mill has retained much of its original character. After periods of decline, De Hoop was restored and returned to working order, allowing visitors to see the mill in motion during special openings and milling demonstrations. Surrounded by open space and historic village streets, it offers a peaceful contrast to Arnhem’s urban centre. Today, De Hoop serves both as a functional monument and a beloved local landmark, celebrating the region’s agricultural heritage and the enduring beauty of traditional Dutch windmills.

De Hoop Windmill is located at Molenweg 1C in the Elden district south of Arnhem's city centre, along the Rhine river near the John Frost Bridge. Built in 1846 as a working smock mill, it stands prominently on a small mound overlooking scenic cycle paths and green spaces. Nearby attractions include the GelreDome stadium less than a kilometre away, Westerveld Park for walks, and the Airborne Monument with Rhine views just 3km north. The area offers easy access to shopping at Winkelcentrum Kronenburg, parks like Stadsblokken-Meinerswijk, and bridges such as Nelson Mandela Bridge, with parking and bus links to Arnhem Centraal station.
