The Sabelspoort is Arnhem’s last surviving medieval city gate and one of the most atmospheric historic structures in the city. First mentioned in the 14th century, it once formed part of a fortified complex that protected the eastern approach to Arnhem. Over time, the gate served multiple purposes, from defence to functioning as a prison, which earned it the nickname “Geckenpoort.” Its sturdy brickwork, arched passageway, and later Renaissance‑style façade reflect centuries of architectural evolution. Positioned beside the provincial government buildings and close to the Markt, the Sabelspoort now stands as a quiet reminder of Arnhem’s fortified past. Sabelspoort is located at Markt 2 in the historic heart of Arnhem, right next to the Province House of Gelderland and adjacent to the bustling Markt square.
