The John Frost Bridge is one of Arnhem’s most powerful symbols, forever linked to the events of the Second World War. Completed in 1932, the graceful arch spans the Rhine and became world‑famous during the Battle of Arnhem in 1944, when British paratroopers led by Lieutenant Colonel John Frost held the northern end of the bridge against overwhelming German forces. Their stand, though ultimately unsuccessful, became a defining moment of courage and sacrifice, later immortalised in film and literature. After the war, the heavily damaged bridge was rebuilt and renamed in Frost’s honour, preserving its place in collective memory. Today, it serves not only as a vital river crossing but also as a living monument, complemented by nearby memorials and the Airborne at the Bridge exhibition. John Frost Bridge spans the Lower Rhine in central Arnhem, connecting the city centre with the southern Malburgen district via Nijmeegseweg. Built between 1932 and 1935, this iconic WWII landmark—renamed in 1977 after British Major-General John Frost—links Arnhem-Noord and Arnhem-Zuid, positioned between the Nelson Mandela Bridge to the west and the Andrej Sacharovbrug to the southeast. Nearby, the Airborne Monument at Airborneplein hosts annual commemorations, while the Rhine riverbanks offer scenic walks, cycle paths, and views of parks.
