Turkansaari Open Air Museum in Oulu is one of Finland’s oldest outdoor museums, set on islands in the Oulujoki River where traditional rural life has been preserved in an atmospheric natural landscape. Founded in the 1920s, it features more than forty historic buildings that illustrate the livelihoods of Northern Ostrobothnia, including farming, salmon fishing, tar burning, logging and timber floating. The restored wooden church from 1694 stands as the site’s most significant landmark, recalling the island’s past as a gathering place for fishermen. In summer, the museum comes alive with demonstrations, children’s activities and traditional celebrations such as Midsummer events, offering visitors an immersive glimpse into the region’s cultural heritage.
