Science Centre Tietomaa in Oulu is Finland’s first major science centre, known for making scientific ideas accessible through hands‑on exploration and immersive experiences. Established in 1988 in a former industrial complex, it has long offered interactive exhibits that challenge visitors to experiment, learn and play. The centre is currently undergoing a full renovation and expansion, reopening in 2026 as part of the new Museum and Science Centre Tiima. The renewed Tietomaa will feature redesigned exhibitions, including themes such as machines, northern lights and nature, along with a large‑scale immersive space for multimedia presentations. Although closed during construction, Tietomaa remains an important symbol of curiosity and scientific discovery in northern Finland, promising an even more engaging visitor experience when it reopens.

Location

Science Centre Tietomaa is located in Oulu, Finland—not Tampere—at Nahkatehtaankatu 6, 90100 Oulu, in the Myllytulli district near the city center. Note that it is currently closed for renovation until October 2026. Nearby attractions include the 45-meter Tietomaa Tower observation deck for city views, Hupisaaret Islands park with rapids and botanical gardens, and Oulu Art Museum a short walk away. The University of Oulu Botanical Garden and Pikisaari island's historic wooden houses lie within easy reach, connected by bus 17 or a 10-15 minute stroll from Oulu Market Square.
