Oulu Cathedral is the landmark Lutheran church at the heart of Oulu, rising above the city with its pale neoclassical façade and distinctive green dome. Originally completed in 1777 as a stone church designed by Daniel Hagman, it was largely destroyed in the great fire of 1822, leaving only the stone walls standing. The present cathedral was rebuilt in 1832 under architect C. L. Engel, who added the dome, new roof structures and later the tower completed in 1845. Inside, the cathedral is spacious and serene, featuring an Empire‑style interior and notable artworks, including a 1611 portrait of Johannes Messenius. Its grounds also include Pikku‑Sofia, a small children’s church modelled after Oulu’s earliest wooden church. Today, Oulu Cathedral remains an active place of worship and a central cultural symbol, welcoming visitors year‑round.
