Oulu Castle Cellar is the last surviving remnant of the 17th‑century Oulu Castle, standing on Linnansaari Island near the city centre. The original fortress was largely destroyed over time, with its final collapse in 1793 after lightning ignited the gunpowder stores. Today, the old stone cellar of the former chancellery building remains, topped by the 1875 observatory tower of the Oulu Seafaring School, now home to the Tähtitorni Café. The cellar serves as a small exhibition space where visitors can learn about the founding of Oulu, the castle’s history and the dramatic events that shaped the site. Surrounded by parkland and waterfront views, it offers a quiet, atmospheric stop that connects modern Oulu with its earliest beginnings.
