Toripolliisi, the Market Square Policeman, is one of Oulu’s most recognisable symbols, standing proudly beside the historic Market Hall. Created in 1987 by sculptor Kaarlo Mikkonen, the bronze figure commemorates the market square policemen who once patrolled the bustling harbourfront from the early 1900s until the late 1970s. With his sturdy build, cap and belt, the friendly‑looking officer reflects the approachable authority these policemen represented in daily life. Today, Toripolliisi is a beloved meeting point and a favourite photo spot for visitors exploring the lively square, where traditional stalls, cafés and the sea breeze create a vibrant atmosphere. More than a statue, it captures the spirit of Oulu’s communal past and continues to watch over the heart of the city.
