Ajan kulku, The Passage of Time, is a public artwork located behind Oulu City Hall, offering a sculptural journey through the city’s 400‑year history. Created by artist Sanna Koivisto and unveiled in 2005, the piece consists of 32 bronze miniature figures arranged on a long red‑granite pedestal. Each figure represents a moment, profession or character from Oulu’s past, beginning with King Charles IX, who founded the city in 1605, and continuing through fishermen, merchants, craftsmen, sailors, workers, students and finally a child gazing toward the future. The work blends realism with symbolism, inviting viewers to reflect on how generations have shaped the city’s identity. Set in a quiet park beside the art museum and the city’s historic core, Ajan kulku is both a cultural landmark and a contemplative stop for anyone exploring Oulu’s urban heritage.
