Oulu City Theatre is the cultural heart of Oulu, standing on Vänmanninsaari Island by the waterfront in a striking modernist building completed in 1972. The theatre traces its roots to 1931, when it began as Oulun Näyttämö before becoming municipally owned and renamed Oulu City Theatre in 1965. Its spacious main stage seats over 500 spectators, complemented by several smaller stages that support a diverse annual programme. The theatre presents contemporary Finnish drama, international classics, musicals and productions for young audiences, making it a vibrant hub for the region’s performing arts. Renovated and expanded in the early 2000s, it continues to host hundreds of performances each year, offering visitors a dynamic and welcoming window into Oulu’s creative life.

Oulu City Theatre is located on Vänmanninsaari island at Kaarlenväylä 2, 90015 Oulu, very close to the city’s Market Square in the city‑centre waterfront area. Nearby you can easily combine a visit with Oulu Market Square and Market Hall just across the river, the riverside promenade, Oulu Cathedral, the adjacent Pokkinen district with cafés and shops, and other cultural spots such as Oulu Museum of Art and the city’s main events and festival venues within a short walk.
