Its most iconic exhibit, Kirkgate, is a fully reconstructed Victorian street featuring authentic shopfronts and cobbled lanes, designed to evoke life in 19th-century York. The museum also showcases period rooms, fashion through the ages, and the original cell of highwayman Dick Turpin. Located beside Clifford’s Tower, the site itself dates back to William the Conqueror’s 11th-century motte-and-bailey fortress. Over time, the museum has expanded to include Raindale Mill and exhibitions exploring themes like body image, childhood, and domestic life. Managed by York Museums Trust, York Castle Museum continues to captivate visitors with its blend of historical depth and engaging interpretation, making the past feel immediate and personal.
