Merchant Adventurers’ Hall in York is one of the finest surviving medieval guildhalls in the world, built between 1357 and 1368 as the meeting place, chapel, and almshouse of the religious fraternity that became the Company of Merchant Adventurers. Framed in oak from the nearby Forest of Galtres, its Great Hall is the largest timber‑framed building in the UK still used for its original purpose. Beneath it, the undercroft once served as a hospital for the poor, while the adjoining 15th‑century chapel provided spiritual care. Over the centuries, the hall evolved with additions from the Elizabethan and Georgian eras, yet it retains its medieval character. Granted a royal charter in 1581, the Company played a central role in York’s mercantile life, trading textiles and goods across Europe. Today, the Grade I listed building remains in the Company’s care, welcoming visitors to explore its architecture, historic collections, and the story of the merchants who shaped York’s prosperity.
