York Observatory

About

York Observatory, set within the Museum Gardens, is the oldest working observatory in Yorkshire and a fascinating reminder of the city’s scientific heritage. Built in 1832–33 for the Yorkshire Philosophical Society, it was inspired by the inaugural meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, held in York in 1831. The octagonal stone building is topped with a distinctive revolving conical roof, designed to allow telescopes to track the night sky. Its most famous instrument is a four‑inch refractor telescope crafted in 1850 by York optician Thomas Cooke, who later built some of the largest telescopes in the world. The observatory also houses an 1811 regulator clock, once the most accurate timepiece in York, used by residents to set their watches for a small fee. Though no major discoveries were made here, the observatory played a vital role in public engagement with astronomy during the Victorian era. Restored in 1981 after falling into disrepair, it now forms part of the York Museums Trust collection, occasionally opening to visitors as a rare survival of early 19th‑century scientific ambition. 2
