Tucked away off Goodramgate, Holy Trinity Church is one of York’s hidden treasures, offering a rare glimpse into the city’s medieval and Georgian past. First recorded in the 11th century, the present building dates mainly from the 15th century and is distinguished by its unusual saddleback roof and peaceful, leafy churchyard. Inside, the atmosphere is strikingly intimate, with high-sided Georgian box pews that once shielded worshippers from draughts and gave families a sense of privacy during services. The church also preserves fine medieval stained glass, including the east window of 1471, which depicts the Holy Trinity and features its donor, Rector John Walker, kneeling in devotion. Other details, such as the piscina used for washing communion vessels, highlight its long continuity of worship. Though no longer in regular use, Holy Trinity still opens its doors to visitors and holds occasional services, offering a quiet retreat in the heart of the city and a powerful reminder of York’s enduring layers of history and faith.
