According to McGee Gallery is a contemporary art space in York founded in 2005 by husband‑and‑wife team Greg and Ails McGee. Originally launched as The ArtSpace before adopting its now familiar name, the gallery quickly established itself opposite Clifford’s Tower as a champion of bold, innovative work by emerging and established artists. Over 17 years on Tower Street it became known for its dynamic exhibitions, collaborations, and community projects, showcasing everything from painting and sculpture to digital and street art. Highlights included shows by musician‑artist Horace Panter, commissions reimagining iconic characters, and cultural events that earned the gallery recognition for its contribution to York’s creative life. In 2022, the McGees closed their Tower Street venue, marking the end of one chapter and the beginning of another, with plans to continue their work in new spaces beyond the city centre. Today, According to McGee remains a symbol of York’s independent art scene, blending entrepreneurial spirit with a passion for making contemporary art accessible and engaging.
