The Richard III Experience at Monk Bar was a captivating museum dedicated to the life and legacy of England’s last Plantagenet king, set within York’s tallest and most elaborate medieval gateway. Operated by the Jorvik Group from 2014, it explored Richard’s early years, his turbulent reign from 1483 to 1485, and his death at the Battle of Bosworth. Visitors could follow the drama of the Wars of the Roses through multimedia displays, arms and armour from his era, and rare artefacts such as a fragment from a 15th‑century gun. The setting itself, Monk Bar, built in the 14th century as part of the city’s defences, added authenticity with its arrow slits, portcullis, and centuries‑old stonework. The experience combined historical interpretation with engaging storytelling, offering insights into both the man and the myths surrounding him. Although it closed in 2020, it remains remembered as a distinctive part of York’s heritage attractions, blending royal history with one of the city’s most iconic medieval landmarks.

The Richard III Experience at Monk Bar was located in Monk Bar, the tallest and most elaborate of York’s four medieval gatehouses, situated on St Maurices Road, York, YO31 7JA. Monk Bar is part of the historic city walls and stands near the northern entrance to the city centre. Nearby attractions include York Minster, The Shambles, Clifford’s Tower, the Jorvik Viking Centre, and the National Railway Museum, all within easy walking distance. Monk Bar itself offers panoramic views of York’s rooftops and is a key point on the city walls walking route. However, the Richard III Experience museum has been permanently closed since the COVID-19 pandemic, though Monk Bar remains accessible as part of the city walls.
