Walmgate Bar is the most complete of York’s medieval gateways and the only one still to retain its original barbican, portcullis, and inner rooms. Standing on the site of a Roman entrance, the present structure dates largely from the 14th and 15th centuries, though it incorporates earlier stonework. Its timber-framed upper storey, added in the 16th century, gives the bar a distinctive character, blending defensive strength with domestic use. For centuries, Walmgate Bar controlled access to the city from the east, serving as both a military checkpoint and a toll gate for traders. It also witnessed moments of conflict, including damage during the siege of York in the English Civil War. Today, the bar remains an evocative reminder of the city’s fortified past, offering visitors a rare glimpse of medieval defensive architecture in its most authentic form. As part of the City Walls walk, it continues to connect York’s living streets with the enduring story of its resilience and heritage.

Walmgate Bar is located on Walmgate at the southeastern side of York’s historic city centre, with the address 85 Walmgate, York YO1 9UA. This striking medieval gateway is notable as the only bar in York to retain its original barbican, portcullis, and oak gates, and now also houses a cosy café in the upper floors. The immediate area boasts independent shops, cafés, and Brew York’s brewery and taproom, while the historic Foss Islands Road and the River Foss are nearby. From Walmgate Bar, visitors can easily access the city walls walk, and attractions such as the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall, the Shambles, and York Barbican performance venue are within a short stroll, making it a lively and historic gateway into the heart of York.
