Multangular Tower

About

The Multangular Tower in York’s Museum Gardens is the city’s finest surviving Roman monument and a vivid reminder of its ancient origins. Built in the early 3rd century as part of the legionary fortress of Eboracum, the tower once stood at the west corner of the stone defences overlooking the River Ouse. Its distinctive ten-sided design gave soldiers a wide angle of fire along the walls, though in practice the fortress was more a symbol of Roman authority than a battlefield stronghold. The lower courses of small, neatly laid stones with bands of red Roman tiles are original, while the upper section was rebuilt in the medieval period and later adapted with arrow slits. Rising around 30 feet, the tower would originally have been taller, with multiple floors and a timber roof. Visible cannonball scars from the English Civil War add another layer to its story, while Roman coffins displayed nearby underline its archaeological significance. Today, set amid the greenery of the Museum Gardens, the Multangular Tower connects York’s Roman foundation with its medieval resilience, standing as a striking testament to nearly two millennia of history.
