The Henry VII Experience at Micklegate Bar was a museum dedicated to the first Tudor king, set within York’s historic southern gateway. Opened in 2014 by the Jorvik Group, it explored Henry’s early life as a Lancastrian heir in exile, his victory over Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485, and the establishment of the Tudor dynasty. Exhibits combined armour, weapons, and period artefacts with interactive displays and “grisly facts” from Horrible Histories author Terry Deary, bringing the turbulence of the Wars of the Roses and Tudor York to life. Micklegate Bar itself, dating back to the 12th century with later medieval defences, has long been the ceremonial entrance for monarchs and a place where the heads of traitors were displayed. The museum also highlighted Henry’s 1486 visit to York, when the city welcomed him with pageantry despite lingering Yorkist loyalties. Closed in 2020, it remains remembered as a distinctive blend of royal history and one of York’s most iconic medieval landmarks.
York United Kingdom
The Henry VII Experience at Micklegate Bar is located at Micklegate Bar, York YO1 6JU, which is the southern gatehouse on York’s historic city walls. Micklegate Bar is one of the most significant medieval gateways, historically serving as the main entrance to the city from the south and the traditional entry point for monarchs who sought permission to enter York. Nearby, visitors can explore York Minster, The Shambles, Clifford's Tower, and the city’s medieval walls walk that links all the main gates. The area is vibrant with pubs, bars, restaurants, and historical streets, making it a lively cultural and heritage hub within York’s city centre.
