Homestead Park is one of York’s most welcoming green spaces, combining history, community spirit, and natural beauty. Created in 1904 by social reformer Seebohm Rowntree, the park was gifted to the people of York so that everyone, regardless of background, could enjoy time in nature. Today it remains a much-loved retreat, managed by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, and continues to reflect its founder’s vision of inclusivity and wellbeing. Visitors can wander through colourful flower borders, tree-lined avenues, and ornamental gardens that change with the seasons, or relax by the pond and enjoy the sculptures dotted across the grounds. Homestead Park is situated in the Clifton area of York, spanning the corner of Water End (postcode YO30 6WP) and Shipton Road (postcode YO30 5RE), with entrances on both roads. Just under a mile northwest of York city centre, the park is within easy reach of local bus routes and has a small car park at the Shipton Road entrance, while Bootham Row car park is a twenty-minute walk away. Nearby, visitors will find the attractive Clifton Green district with shops and cafes, the riverside walk along the Ouse, and easy access to York city walls and Museum Gardens via a scenic stroll. Homestead Park features lawns, play areas, ornamental gardens, and is managed by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, making it a tranquil retreat close to central York’s main attractions.
