The Jorvik Viking Centre in York brings the city’s Viking past vividly to life on the very site where archaeologists uncovered the remains of 10th‑century Jorvik between 1976 and 1981. Over 40,000 artefacts, from timber buildings and tools to textiles and animal remains preserved in wet clay, revealed a thriving trading hub with links stretching from the Byzantine Empire to the Persian Gulf. Opened in 1984 by the York Archaeological Trust, the centre pioneered immersive heritage interpretation, transporting visitors through reconstructed streets complete with authentic sights, sounds, and even smells of Viking‑age York.
