Preston Manor stands at the edge of Preston Park on Preston Drove in Brighton, an elegant Edwardian estate whose origins trace back to the Domesday Book. The current Palladian–Georgian façade dates largely from 1738, when Lord of the Manor Thomas Western rebuilt the earlier medieval structure, and a 1905 renovation by architect Charles Stanley Peach added the house’s signature period charm. Since the Stanford family bequeathed the property to Brighton Corporation in 1932, Preston Manor has invited visitors to step into both “upstairs” and “downstairs” worlds, from the grand drawing rooms to the bustling servants’ quarters. Recent refurbishments—including a new audio guide featuring dramatic portrayals of Edwardian residents and staff—bring the stories of glamorous soirées and domestic toil vividly to life. Beyond the house, a walled garden of historic interest reveals flint walls, a ruined wellhouse and even a charming pet graveyard, while an elegant tearoom occupies one of Ellen Stanford’s favourite rooms. Open from April through November, Preston Manor reopened to the public in April 2025 with free or reduced admission for Brighton & Hove residents. An annual pass grants unlimited entry, encouraging repeat visits to its unfolding programme of ghost tours, afternoon teas and family events.
