Theatre Royal Brighton occupies a commanding site on New Road in the heart of Brighton. Commissioned in 1806 by the Prince of Wales, it opened on 27 June 1807 with Shakespeare’s Hamlet. After decades of financial struggle, actor-manager Henry John Nye Chart enlisted architect Charles James Phipps in 1854 to redesign the house, laying the foundations for its enduring success. Today it forms part of the Ambassador Theatre Group and offers 952 seats over four levels, making it one of the city’s premier live-performance venues. Housed within a Grade II*-listed structure, the theatre’s elegant façade conceals a richly ornamented auditorium complete with a classic proscenium arch and four tiers of seating. Modern refurbishments have introduced a Sennheiser infra-red sound-amplification system, accessible wheelchair spaces and level-access bars on every floor, while the Parlour café on New Road adds a welcoming social hub for pre- and post-show gatherings.
