Set within the ornate High Victorian Gothic boiler house and engine rooms of the former Goldstone Pumping Station on The Droveway, West Blatchington, Brighton BN3 7QA, the British Engineerium celebrates steam power and industrial heritage. A Grade II* listed landmark, its striking polychrome brickwork and ornamental details stand as a testament to 19th-century engineering ambition. Commissioned in 1866 to supply water to Hove and Brighton, the complex’s twin beam engines, boiler houses, workshop and cooling pond reflect the era’s belief that utility need not be dull. In 1976 it was reborn as the Brighton and Hove Engineerium (renamed the British Engineerium in 1981), housing a remarkable collection of operational steam machinery, heavy engineering artifacts and educational exhibits that chart technological innovation across more than a century. While the site has been closed to the public since 2006 for major restoration, annual open days and special events invite visitors to explore its cavernous engine halls and witness live demonstrations of towering beam engines and vintage pumps in action.
