Queen’s Park

About

Queen’s Park is one of Brighton’s most characterful green spaces, set in a sheltered valley just east of the city centre. Originally laid out in the 1820s by developer Thomas Attree and named after Queen Adelaide, consort of William IV, the park was envisioned as the centrepiece of a grand residential estate. Though the full scheme was never realised, the park itself flourished and was gifted to the town in 1890, becoming a much‑loved public space. Today it offers a mix of landscaped gardens, sweeping lawns, and mature trees, with a large pond at its heart that attracts ducks, geese, and moorhens. Features include a Grade II listed clock tower built in 1915, a children’s playground, tennis courts, a café, and a scented garden designed for people with disabilities. The park is also home to the curious “Pepper Pot,” a tower with a varied history as water pump, print works, and artist’s studio. Maintained with the support of the Friends of Queen’s Park, it remains a lively community hub where history, wildlife, and recreation come together in one of Brighton’s most atmospheric settings.
