Hidden in the pastoral embrace of Stanmer Park, the Stanmer Park Rural Museum transports visitors into the heart of Sussex’s agrarian heritage. Tucked behind the elegant 18th-century Stanmer House, the museum occupies a cluster of former farm buildings where volunteers from the Stanmer Preservation Society have curated an extraordinary collection of rural artefacts. From weathered hand-forged tools and horse-drawn ploughs to domestic implements and vintage threshing machines, each object tells a story of village life across two centuries. Exhibits are arranged to evoke the rhythms of traditional farm work and domestic routines. Guests can examine a restored willow basket loom, peer inside a preserved icehouse and wander through an orchard that once supplied Stanmer’s kitchens. Interactive displays invite hands-on engagement: lift a cream churn, handle a scythe or trace the grain path through a miniature granary. Seasonal demonstrations of cider pressing and straw plaiting bring these time-honoured crafts vividly to life. Open Wednesday through Monday from 1 pm to 4 pm, with a special Thursday morning session from 10.30 am to 12 pm, the museum welcomes all with free admission and relies on donations to sustain its conservation work.
