The Jubilee Clock Tower stands proudly at the busy junction of North Street, West Street, and Queen’s Road, marking the heart of central Brighton. Built in 1888 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, it was designed by architect John Johnson and funded by local businessman James Willing. Rising 75 feet, the tower combines red granite, terracotta, and limestone, with four clock faces visible from every direction. Its base features sculpted figures symbolising virtues, while portraits of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, and the Prince and Princess of Wales reflect its royal dedication. Originally, the tower also housed an innovative time ball mechanism designed by Magnus Volk, which dropped on the hour but was soon abandoned due to noise complaints. Though its eclectic style divided opinion at the time, the Clock Tower has become one of Brighton’s most recognisable landmarks, a Grade II listed structure that continues to anchor the city’s commercial centre. More than a timepiece, it remains a nostalgic emblem of Brighton’s Victorian heritage and civic pride.
