M Shed

About

M Shed, set on Bristol’s historic Harbourside, is the city’s museum of social history, dedicated to telling the story of Bristol and its people. Opened in 2011 within a converted 1950s transit shed, it explores the city’s past and present through thousands of objects, photographs, films, and personal stories. The galleries are arranged around themes of People, Places, and Life, offering perspectives on everything from industry and migration to music, protest, and everyday life. Outside, the museum is framed by four towering cargo cranes and a collection of historic vessels, including the steam tug Mayflower and the fireboat Pyronaut, which bring the working docks vividly to life. M Shed also plays a role in contemporary debates, most notably by displaying the toppled statue of Edward Colston to encourage reflection on Bristol’s links to the transatlantic slave trade. With free entry, a café overlooking the water, and a programme of changing exhibitions and events, M Shed is both a cultural landmark and a living space where the city continues to examine its identity and future.

M Shed is located on Prince’s Wharf, Wapping Road, Bristol BS1 4RN, right beside the city’s Floating Harbour in the heart of the historic Harbourside district. Its location places it among some of Bristol’s most vibrant attractions—directly alongside the waterfront and close to the famous SS Great Britain, the replica of the ship The Matthew, and the Arnolfini contemporary arts centre. Nearby, visitors can enjoy the lively Wapping Wharf with its array of independent eateries and shops, as well as stroll across the harbourside to Millennium Square and We The Curious science centre. The area is rich in maritime history and public art, and the museum’s outdoor spaces include preserved dockside cranes and historic vessels that enhance the dockside atmosphere.
