Brunel’s SS Great Britain

Brunel’s SS Great Britain
About

Brunel’s SS Great Britain, preserved in Bristol’s historic Great Western Dockyard, is one of the most important ships in maritime history. Launched in 1843, it was the world’s first great ocean‑going liner built of iron and driven by a screw propeller, a revolutionary design by Isambard Kingdom Brunel that transformed sea travel. At the time of her maiden voyage to New York in 1845, she was the largest passenger ship in the world, combining cutting‑edge engineering with unprecedented scale. Over her long career she carried thousands of emigrants to Australia, served as a cargo vessel, and endured storms around Cape Horn before being abandoned in the Falkland Islands. Rescued and returned to Bristol in 1970, the ship has since been meticulously restored and now forms the centrepiece of an award‑winning museum. Visitors can step aboard to explore the recreated cabins, engine room, and decks, while the surrounding dockyard tells the story of her construction, voyages, and survival. Today, the SS Great Britain stands as both a pioneering feat of Victorian innovation and a powerful symbol of Bristol’s maritime heritage.
