The Georgian House Museum

The Georgian House Museum
About

The Georgian House Museum in Bristol is an elegant late 18th‑century townhouse that offers a vivid glimpse into the city’s past. Built around 1790 for John Pinney, a wealthy sugar merchant and plantation owner, the house is now preserved as a period museum, furnished to reflect life both above and below stairs. Visitors can explore eleven rooms across four floors, from the grand dining and drawing rooms where Bristol’s elite once entertained, to the basement kitchen, laundry, and housekeeper’s quarters that reveal the hidden labour sustaining the household. The museum also tells the story of Pero, an enslaved man who lived and worked here after being brought from the Caribbean, his legacy remembered today in the naming of Pero’s Bridge at the Harbourside. With original features such as a rare cold‑water plunge bath and authentic Georgian furniture, the house provides a powerful insight into the wealth, taste, and contradictions of the era. Free to enter, it stands as both a beautifully preserved home and a place of reflection on Bristol’s role in the transatlantic slave trade.
