The Wills Memorial Building, standing proudly at the top of Park Street, is one of Bristol’s most recognisable landmarks and a masterpiece of neo-Gothic architecture. Commissioned by the Wills family in memory of Henry Overton Wills III, the first Chancellor of the University of Bristol, it was designed by Sir George Oatley and completed in 1925 after a decade of construction. Rising 215 feet, the tower dominates the city skyline and has been described as one of the last great Gothic buildings to be built in England. Today it serves as the ceremonial heart of the University, housing the School of Law, the Department of Earth Sciences, and the Great Hall, where graduations and major events are held. Visitors can join guided tours to climb the tower’s 68 metres for panoramic views across Bristol and beyond, while inside, the vaulted ceilings, carved stonework, and oak-panelled interiors reflect the grandeur of its design. A Grade II* listed building, the Wills Memorial remains both a symbol of academic achievement and a striking testament to Bristol’s architectural heritage.
