Bristol Hippodrome

About

The Bristol Hippodrome, on St Augustine’s Parade, is one of the city’s most iconic theatres and a cornerstone of its cultural life. Designed by renowned architect Frank Matcham and opened in 1912, it was his last major project and remains a Grade II listed building. The theatre is famous for its grand auditorium, complete with an ornate dome that can still be opened, and for its original stage machinery, which once included a vast water tank used for spectacular aquatic performances. Surviving wartime bombing and a devastating fire in 1948, the Hippodrome has continued to thrive as a venue for large‑scale productions. With a capacity of nearly 2,000, it regularly hosts touring West End musicals, opera, ballet, comedy, and concerts, making it one of the largest and most versatile stages outside London. Over the decades it has welcomed legendary performers and premieres, cementing its reputation as a theatre of national importance. Today, the Bristol Hippodrome combines Edwardian splendour with modern staging to deliver unforgettable live entertainment at the heart of the city.
