Bristol Old Vic
About

Bristol Old Vic, on King Street in the city’s historic centre, is the oldest continuously operating theatre in the English‑speaking world. First opened in 1766 as the Theatre Royal, it has been a stage for drama, music, and debate for more than 250 years. The Georgian auditorium, praised by actors and audiences alike for its intimacy and beauty, has hosted generations of performers, from 18th‑century stars to some of today’s most celebrated names. Extensively restored and redeveloped in recent years, the theatre now combines its Grade I listed heritage with modern facilities, including the welcoming foyer created from the adjoining Coopers’ Hall. Alongside a vibrant programme of classic and contemporary productions, Bristol Old Vic is committed to nurturing new writing, supporting emerging artists, and engaging with communities across the city. Its links with the renowned Bristol Old Vic Theatre School have produced many distinguished alumni, while its outreach projects ensure the theatre remains a living part of Bristol’s cultural fabric. More than a historic landmark, it continues to be a dynamic home for storytelling and creativity.
