Kings Weston Roman Villa

About

Kings Weston Roman Villa, discovered in 1947 during the building of the Lawrence Weston estate, is one of Bristol’s most important archaeological sites. Excavated between 1948 and 1950, it revealed the remains of a prosperous third‑century villa complete with mosaic floors, painted wall plaster, and an advanced hypocaust heating system. The highlight is Bristol’s only surviving Roman bath suite, offering a rare glimpse into the luxury and engineering of Roman domestic life. Finds from the site, including coins, pottery, tools, and personal items, suggest a household that was both self‑sufficient and connected to wider trade networks. The villa also holds traces of dramatic history: excavators uncovered human remains beneath one mosaic floor, hinting at a violent end for at least one inhabitant. Today, visitors can view the preserved walls, mosaics, and bath complex, with access arranged through Blaise Museum. Though modest in scale, Kings Weston Roman Villa vividly evokes the presence of Rome in the West Country and remains a fascinating link between Bristol’s modern suburbs and its ancient past.
